Pesticide and growth booster : fermented vegetable garbage in molasses
For the protection of plants against herbivorous mites and parasites many farmers in South East Asia spray a diluted solution of fermented vegetable garbage - fruits, spices leftovers from the kitchen - in molasses ( 3 to 1 by weight ).
If the vegetable garbage are fresh, then water may not be added, at least in the first stage. After at least 3 months of an anaerobic fermentation at a temperature above 30 Celsius the content is a viscous and acidic liquid whose properties are debated ( You may want to read http://www.ecowalkthetalk.com/

Despite moist paper and plastic bag the Hoya curtisii dried
The 5 rooted plants were wrapped in moist paper and plastic bag, but despite this method the curtsii dried in transit ( Hoya plants in a Small parcel Air to France ).
We use a plastic bag to avoid dehydration ( and to prevent contact between the non root parts of the plant and the sticking moist papers wrapping the other plants around ) but the risk of rot , risk which is higher with rooted plants than cuttings, cannot be avoided either.
Our packing method is by default : in the absence of alternate instructions with the order we will pack rooted plants in humid papers and plastic bags.

Why do cuttings travel better than rooted plants ?
http://aleyagarden-hoya-list.blogspot.com/2013/05/you-over-watered-my-plants-when-you.html
When we take plants out of their normal substrate and wash their roots, or take cuttings, they go right into shock and start a kind of survival program. The more material they have to sustain, the more energy it will take, and roots are a very precious part for the plant so it will try to save them. When plants/cuttings have light, they can produce energy (in the form of sugar) in their leaves by photosynthesis, which will be transported down to the roots for feeding them. An uprooted plant will survive if it finds itself somewhere on the soil where it can grow new roots into. When plants are in a box with no light, however, they will "suck" the energy from the leaves which will thereby be harmed. For traveling in darkness it is better to not have roots, so the unrooted cutting remains in a state of shock; it will be dormant and the leaves sustain themselves for quite some time, so when times become better (i.e. the cuttings arrive in loving hands that pot them up and give them light and humidity) they still have enough energy to put into the formation of new roots. Without enough humidity in the surrounding air ( that can be provided by a terrarium or a large plastic bag ) plants or cuts will shed their leaves in the hours that follow unpacking.

You over / under / watered my plants when you packed !
We don't add water, we squeeze the coco or moss that contains the roots and let the water evaporate, at the same time evapotranspiration occurs through the stomata, several hours before closing the parcel :
Only after arrival can we say : " the plant has rot so the bag was too wet " or " it has dehydrated so it was not hydrated enough in the bag. " Such statements are never wrong, they are just tautological.
So how do we know that humidity is in the best possible range ? We know it from visual data, from touch, from pressure exerted on the coco, from the weight of the bag : after several hours of transpiration our index should need to exert a slight pressure on the hydrated paper in order to pierce it. If the finger passes through too easily, it's too wet; and rot will have more chance on rainy days during the travel : the roots or other parts may rot and lyse as would do a clean and dry cucumber inside a perfectly clean plastic bag after a week or so ... but this packing may be perfect for dry and hot air. If the exerting pressure is too high dehydration may start too fast ... but this packing may be perfect for cold and humid air.

Can you send parcels with reinforced cardboard ?
We use standard parcels of the post and we can reinforce them if you notify us when placing your order; but the weight and postage would increase accordingly.
However in some situations even much stronger and heavier reinforced cardboard could not challenge exceptional smashes or energetic opening / closing below standard of parcels by postal staff at the customs.

Risk of mishandled parcels by the Posts
The risk of mishandled parcels by the Posts seems to be lowering with time; is this improving situation linked to the fact that the tracking systems are also improving ?
However a risk always exists ( the picture below shows a report of incorrect arrival at facility ) and some sellers tend to believe that mishandling at Posts and Customs is more frequent with EMS than with small parcels, ( hence, they think that Small Parcel is a better option for the price.)
Is it because EMS parcels go more often through customs where some operations cannot be automated ?
As long as tracking is not fully reported and available online the users of the postal services cannot compare the frequencies of mishandling, from Small Parcel Air to EMS. But they are low.

Hoya brevialata, Hoya incurvula : different leaves and flowers
It may happen that Hoya brevialata and Hoya incurvula are identified as a single species, but they are really different : brevialata on the right below has light green leaves and its tips are often more rounded. The flowers are larger.

Sorting stations of the posts and planes work during the week ends
The two pictures below show tracking information available online : we posted in Thailand on Friday 5 April an EMS parcel for Sweden and on Thursday 18 April a Small parcel air for Poland; the parcels were sorted on Sunday 7 and Sunday 21 at Suvarnabhumi international airport. Customs clearances in the arrival countries were done on Monday for the EMS parcel ( delivered the following day, on Tuesday ) and on Tuesday for the Small parcel air ( delivered on Thursday ).
Nota : most countries do not have an online tracking system for small parcels air; only EMS parcels can be tracked by all countries. Moreover information is not always reported on the tracking site when it could be available.
In countries with a fast postal system, the cheaper Small parcels air of live plants ( available up to 2000 gr in most countries ) may be preferred to EMS : EMS parcels are more often checked by customs than small parcels.
1- EMS parcel to SWEDEN
2 - Small Parcel Air to POLAND

Risk of frozen plants in planes : how cold it gets with altitude.
I am in Texas , can I safely import live plants from Thailand in April and May ?
Thailand is like Texas in the northern hemisphere and the planes take routes in this hemisphere, where temperature get warmer during these months.
But at anytime of the year the risk of freezing in planes exists when they fly, and this risk is between any two airports, whether it be between 2 distant towns of the same country or between two countries ( we are not considering temperature at the airports where cargo are downloaded, or in Post office buildings and warehouses etc. where temperature are warmer in spring ). Indeed at the altitude where planes fly the temperature is less than on ground by more or less 6.5 Celsius per km ( 3 F per 1,000 ft. ) of altitude.
For instance if the temperature in your garden is 25 Celsius in April or May then 9 km above ( where planes can fly ) the temperature is 25 - ( 9 x 6.5 ) = - 33.5 Celsius ( - 92.3 Fahrenheit ) .
In aircrafts the temperature normally flows from the cabin to the hold so temperature and pressure are about the same in cargo holds and cabins : usually holds are only a couple degrees cooler than the main cabin. But this setup can change from aircraft model to aircraft model and a reader on a http://www.airliners.net, made this comment : " it doesn't usually go below freezing. If you're worried about too hot, that's a little more iffy. "
Adding foam in cartons can be an option, but the cost of transport increases accordingly.
